Akamai Technologies announced on March 27, 2025, that it has become the new infrastructure partner for kernel.org, the main distribution system for Linux kernel source code. Akamai signed a multi-year agreement with the Linux Kernel Organization to provide its cloud computing service and content delivery network (CDN) to support the project and its global network of developers. This support is provided at no cost.
The work of these engineers is critical to maintaining the security and performance of the Linux operating system, which underpins most governments, research laboratories, corporations, smartphones, and the internet. The Linux kernel is a massive project with approximately 28 million lines of code, to which over 13,500 developers from more than 1,300 companies have contributed since 2005.
Alex Chircop, Chief Architect, Akamai Cloud, and member of the CNCF's Technical Oversight Committee, stated that Akamai depends on Linux and is giving back to the community. This commitment further showcases Akamai's long-standing stewardship and contribution to open-source projects, building on its acquisition of Linux cloud pioneer Linode in 2022.
