Ambarella, Inc. announced the N1-655 edge GenAI system-on-chip (SoC) at CES on January 7, 2025, expanding its N1 Edge GenAI family. This new SoC is designed for on-premise multi-channel Vision Language Model (VLM) and Neural Network (NN) processing. It provides on-chip decode of 12 simultaneous 1080p30 video streams while concurrently processing video and running multiple multimodal VLMs and traditional CNNs. The N1-655 SoC delivers high AI processing performance, supporting popular multimodal VLMs and Large Language Models (LLMs) like Phi, Gemma, LLaVA-OneVision, and Llama. It achieves this while consuming only 20 watts of power, which is significantly lower than cloud processors. This low-power, high-performance capability targets applications such as on-premise AI boxes, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and smart-city security video recorders, operating without an internet connection. Ambarella is expanding its Cooper Developer Platform with the new Cooper Pro member, a developer kit powered by the N1-655, which will begin shipping after CES. Samples of the N1-655 are available now upon request. This product launch reinforces Ambarella's strategy to enable more GenAI processing at the edge, addressing concerns about bandwidth costs, service fees, power usage, and data privacy associated with cloud-based processing.
