Baker Hughes announced on June 26, 2025, the launch of the GuardVibe™ torsional vibration dampener, a new approach to limiting the impact of high-frequency torsional drill string vibrations. This innovative solution aims to extend the service life of bottom hole assemblies (BHA), reduce capital costs, and limit unplanned downtime for operators.
Unlike traditional methods, GuardVibe uses internal inertia mass to counteract torsional vibrations, eliminating previous mechanical and electrical failure mechanisms and improving reliability. The system is deployed as part of a holistic BHA design, optimized using Baker Hughes' proprietary software for each well's unique demands.
Field-tested on over 350 drilling runs, primarily in the Permian Basin, GuardVibe eliminated high-frequency torsional oscillation during 98% of the drilling process. This resulted in superior rates of penetration and weight on bit compared to BHAs with traditional vibration mitigation tools, with similar results recorded in the Middle East and South America.
