BP confirms that the CO2 content in its Bumerangue discovery in the pre‑salt Santos Basin can be managed, removing a key technical hurdle for development.

The discovery, announced in August 2025, sits 404 km offshore Brazil in 2,372‑meter water depth. The 1‑BP‑13‑SPS well penetrated a ~1,000‑meter hydrocarbon column, with 100 meters of oil and 900 meters of liquids‑rich gas‑condensate, and the reservoir covers more than 300 km² of high‑quality carbonate rock.

BP attributes its ability to handle the high CO2 to liquids throughout the hydrocarbon column, superior rock properties, and its deep‑water technology experience. The company is conducting laboratory testing and plans appraisal work in early 2027, subject to regulatory approval, and is evaluating an early production system.

The field is potentially BP’s largest discovery in 25 years, comparable to the Shah Deniz find, and could become a core production hub in Brazil. BP is seeking a partner to share investment and risk for the block.

Bumerangue is one of 12 discoveries BP made in 2025 across the Gulf of Mexico, Namibia, and other basins, underscoring the company’s ongoing upstream growth strategy.
