BorgWarner has secured its first North American contract to supply battery technology for autonomous vehicles, providing its NMC 157 cylindrical cell battery system to HOLON’s Level 4 fully electric urban shuttle.
The contract covers two 57 kWh battery packs that will power the 15‑person shuttle, with manufacturing scheduled to begin in Q2 2027 at BorgWarner’s Seneca, South Carolina facility. The battery system is Buy America compliant and meets Foreign Entity of Concern restrictions.
The deal marks BorgWarner’s entry into the autonomous vehicle market and diversifies its portfolio as the company shifts from a combustion‑vehicle focus to an electric‑vehicle‑centric business model. In Q3 2025, BorgWarner reported a 4.1% increase in U.S. GAAP net sales and a 2.1% increase in organic sales year‑over‑year, driven by robust global car production and growing demand for EV technology.
Management highlighted the contract as a key milestone in the company’s strategy to expand its electric mobility offerings and noted that the new revenue stream will support continued investment in battery technology and autonomous vehicle solutions.
The HOLON urban shuttle, first unveiled at CES 2023, is slated for production in the U.S. starting in late 2027, positioning BorgWarner to play a significant role in the emerging autonomous mobility market.
