Cibus, Inc. announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed its Plant Biotechnology Consultation Program for Cibus's altered lignin alfalfa trait. The FDA notified Cibus that it has no further questions concerning the use of altered lignin alfalfa in food or feed.
This trait, developed in partnership with S&W Seed Company, provides an altered lignin profile that offers potential increased nutrient availability for livestock and greater flexibility in harvest timing for farmers. This results in higher value alfalfa produced with the same inputs.
Peter Beetham, Interim CEO, expressed pleasure that the FDA reached the same conclusion as Cibus regarding the suitability of altered lignin alfalfa for food and feed applications. S&W Seed Company is now poised to offer the first commercial gene-edited alfalfa varieties, with commercial quantities available in two initial variety offerings for purchase and planting in the United States.
