Trans Americas Fiber System (TAFS) announced today that its new TAM‑1 subsea cable system will incorporate Ciena’s high‑capacity optical solutions. The 7,200‑km cable will connect Central America and the Caribbean directly to the United States, with landing points in Mexico, Colombia, and other key markets.
The system is engineered for more than 650 Tbps of capacity, using 24 fiber pairs southbound and 12 northbound. Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme, powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme, and the 6500 Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) will light portions of the cable, enabling spectrum sharing, fluid scalability, and low‑latency connectivity for AI, cloud, 5G, edge computing, and enterprise services.
TAFS plans to bring the northern route of TAM‑1 into service in Q4 2025, followed by the southern route in Q1 2026. The open‑architecture design supports operators to expand capacity seamlessly as demand accelerates.
This deployment marks a significant expansion of Ciena’s footprint in submarine cable infrastructure, underscoring the company’s leadership in delivering adaptive, high‑speed connectivity for the next generation of data‑intensive workloads across the Americas.
