Coherent Corp. signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms with the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act for proposed funding of up to $33 million. This investment aims to support the modernization and expansion of a manufacturing cleanroom in Sherman, Texas. The funding will establish the world's first 150-millimeter Indium Phosphide (InP) manufacturing line by adding advanced wafer fabrication equipment to produce InP devices at scale. This expansion is expected to create approximately 70 jobs. InP optoelectronic devices are crucial for applications such as datacom and telecom transceivers, including those for AI infrastructure, advanced sensing in consumer electronics, and medical and automotive applications. This initiative strengthens domestic semiconductor production and meets rising demand for these critical components.
