Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division announced on December 4, 2024, the delivery of the first submarine component featuring an additively manufactured (AM) impeller for installation in a U.S. Navy vessel. This achievement resulted from a collaboration with Sintavia, LLC and Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc. (BPMI). The AM impeller underwent a thorough qualification process before being assembled into the pump and tested at Curtiss-Wright’s facility in Bethlehem, PA. Additive manufacturing technology offers a solution for components that have historically been difficult or costly to produce. The use of this technology is expected to provide a reliable and high-quality domestic source for critical parts. It is also anticipated to lead to shorter manufacturing lead times, increased quality, lower performance risk, and improved delivery to meet the needs of the U.S. Navy.
