Datadog, Inc. announced the release of its new report, the State of Cloud Security 2024, on October 21, 2024. The report identified that long-lived credentials continue to pose a major risk for organizations across all cloud providers. This issue is a significant security concern as these credentials never expire and are frequently leaked. The report found that almost half, specifically 46%, of organizations are still utilizing unmanaged users with long-lived credentials. Furthermore, 62% of Google Cloud service accounts, 60% of AWS IAM users, and 46% of Microsoft Entra ID applications possess an access key older than one year. Andrew Krug, Head of Security Advocacy at Datadog, stated that most cloud security incidents are caused by compromised credentials. The report suggests that companies need to secure identities with modern authentication mechanisms, leverage short-lived credentials, and actively monitor changes to APIs to protect themselves.
