Digital Realty announced that its subsidiary, Teraco, has begun construction on a 120-megawatt (MW) utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in South Africa. This initiative marks a significant step in the company's global sustainability efforts, with Teraco set to own the power plant and wheel the renewable energy directly to its data centers.
The solar power plant is projected to commence generating power in late 2026, with its full operational output expected to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 110,000 South African homes. This project underscores Digital Realty's commitment to powering the digital world responsibly and reducing its carbon footprint.
With this development, Digital Realty continues to advance its renewable energy goals, having already matched over 150 data centers across its global portfolio with 100% renewable electricity. The company now boasts more than 1.5 gigawatts of contracted solar and wind capacity, demonstrating a steadfast dedication to sustainable business practices worldwide.
