Southern California Edison (SCE) has opened its Wildfire Recovery Compensation Program for the Eaton Fire, allowing eligible individuals and businesses to file claims for losses incurred during the January 2025 blaze.
The program covers direct impacts such as total or partial structure loss, commercial property loss, business interruption, non‑burn damage (smoke, soot, ash), physical injury, and loss of life. Claimants may submit requests through a secure website until November 30, 2026, and can receive assistance via a dedicated phone line. Participants can choose a Fast Pay option for immediate settlement or a Detailed Review for a more thorough assessment.
SCE’s program design was informed by over a thousand community listening sessions and an independent evaluation by RAND Corporation, which confirmed the credibility of the valuation methodology. Compensation design experts Kenneth R. Feinberg and Camille S. Biros were also engaged to ensure the program is transparent, swift, and fair.
Edison International reported Q3 2025 earnings of $832 million in net income, $5.75 billion in operating revenue, and a GAAP EPS of $2.16. The company’s 2025 core EPS guidance is $5.95‑$6.20. The compensation program is part of SCE’s broader strategy to manage wildfire liabilities, which could be capped at $3.9 billion under California Senate Bill 254.
The Eaton Fire, which killed 19 people and destroyed more than 9,400 structures over 14,000 acres, has placed significant liability on SCE. While the program is voluntary, legal representatives have raised concerns that accepting compensation may require waiving the right to sue, potentially resulting in lower payouts compared to litigation.
California’s Senate Bill 254 establishes a wildfire fund that provides financial stability for utilities. SCE’s liability for the Eaton Fire is subject to this cap, and the compensation program aims to provide timely relief to affected residents while managing regulatory exposure.
