Getty Images entered into a global, multi‑year licensing agreement with AI search engine Perplexity, granting the platform access to Getty’s creative and editorial image library via Getty’s API.

The agreement requires Perplexity to display Getty images with proper attribution, including image credits and links back to Getty’s site. The partnership is intended to enhance Perplexity’s visual search experience while ensuring creators receive recognition and licensing compliance.

The deal aligns with Getty’s strategy to monetize its extensive archive within the AI ecosystem. Getty’s 2024 full‑year revenue was $939.3 million, with creative revenue of $552.8 million and editorial revenue of $345.9 million. The agreement is expected to generate additional licensing revenue over the multi‑year term.

Perplexity has faced legal scrutiny over content scraping and copyright infringement, including lawsuits from publishers and from Getty itself. The licensing agreement provides Perplexity with a legitimate source of high‑quality imagery and helps mitigate legal risks. Perplexity’s valuation reached $20 billion in September 2025, and the partnership is part of its strategy to strengthen its content offering.

The agreement reflects a broader industry trend of AI companies moving from aggressive data harvesting to formal licensing arrangements to secure legitimate content and avoid legal repercussions.
