GlobalFoundries and Silicon Labs have expanded their partnership to manufacture Silicon Labs’ Series 2 wireless system‑on‑chips on GlobalFoundries’ 40 nm Ultra Low Power (40ULP‑ESF3) platform at the Malta, New York fab. The 40ULP‑ESF3 platform delivers ultra‑low standby leakage, high endurance, and integrated analog features, enabling secure, battery‑powered IoT edge devices that require always‑on connectivity.

The collaboration allows Silicon Labs to accelerate the production of its Series 2 devices, such as the EFR32MG21 and EFR32BG21 SoCs, which support multiprotocol, Zigbee, Thread, and Bluetooth mesh networking. The partnership is expected to meet the rising demand for secure, low‑power connectivity in consumer and industrial IoT markets, and to strengthen Silicon Labs’ supply‑chain resilience amid global chip shortages.

GlobalFoundries’ expansion of its U.S. manufacturing footprint is part of a broader strategy to focus on essential chip technologies for automotive, communications infrastructure, and edge AI. The company has invested $11.6 billion in the Malta facility, announced in February 2024, to triple its capacity. The new partnership reinforces GlobalFoundries’ position as a key domestic supplier and supports the U.S. semiconductor supply chain under the CHIPS and Science Act.

Financial context: In Q4 2024, GlobalFoundries reported a net loss of $729 million, driven by a $1.2 billion impairment charge, while its revenue fell 9% year‑over‑year. Silicon Labs posted Q4 2024 revenue of $166 million, with a GAAP diluted loss per share of $0.73. The partnership is expected to offset some of GlobalFoundries’ recent financial challenges by expanding its customer base and generating new revenue streams in the growing IoT connectivity market.
