On October 7, 2025, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that its Newport News Shipbuilding division successfully completed initial sea trials of the Virginia‑class attack submarine Massachusetts (SSN 798). The trials took place over several days at sea and included the submarine’s first submergence and high‑speed maneuvers on both the surface and submerged.
During the testing program, the Navy and NNS teams evaluated a range of systems and components, confirming the vessel’s operational readiness and the effectiveness of its propulsion, navigation, and combat systems. The successful completion of these trials demonstrates that Massachusetts is progressing toward its scheduled delivery to the U.S. Navy.
The Massachusetts submarine is the 25th vessel of the Virginia‑class and the 12th delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding. This milestone not only validates HII’s shipbuilding capabilities but also signals that the shipyard is on track to meet future delivery commitments, reinforcing the company’s position as the nation’s largest military shipbuilder.
