Heliogen Inc. announced the conclusion of its Capella demonstration project, a first-of-a-kind initiative jointly funded by Woodside Energy (USA) Inc. and the US Department of Energy. The project aimed to advance Generation 3 concentrated solar power (CSP) technology, targeting the deployment of a 5-MWe plant. The decision was made not to pursue construction of the project after the front-end engineering and design phase, citing cost escalation as the primary reason. Despite the halt in construction, Heliogen CEO Christie Obiaya stated that the Capella project achieved several first-ever milestones in prototyping and design, providing critical learnings for improving the techno-economics of Gen 3 CSP. Following the conclusion of Capella, Heliogen's core focus will shift to addressing the demand growth for dispatchable, reliable low-carbon energy solutions, particularly from data centers. The company plans to meet these needs through the deployment of its commercially proven Gen 2 CSP solution, enhanced by Heliogen’s machine-learning software.
