Hexcel and Specialty Materials Unveil New High Modulus, High Compression Unidirectional Prepreg

Hexcel Corporation and Specialty Materials have introduced a new high modulus, high compression unidirectional prepreg, known as Hy-Bor® technology. This innovative material combines Hexcel's high modulus carbon fiber with boron fiber, significantly enhancing compression strength for advanced military applications.

Developed under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program contract from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), the Hy-Bor® technology demonstrated substantial performance improvements. It resulted in a greater than 2X improvement in 0⁰ compression strength, open-hole compression strength, and flexural strength when compared to a baseline carbon fiber-only composite of similar fiber volume.

The DLA has awarded Specialty Materials a Phase II SBIR contract to further advance this High Modulus Hy-Bor® composite technology. This new funding will focus on optimizing the prepreg material to deliver maximum performance at minimum cost, enhancing its compatibility with both manual layup and automated fiber placement manufacturing processes.
