International Paper announced on February 13, 2025, the permanent closure of four facilities in the U.S. These include the Red River containerboard mill in Campti, Louisiana, a recycling plant in Phoenix, Arizona, a box plant in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and a sheet feeder facility in St. Louis, Missouri.
All affected facilities are scheduled to cease operations by the end of April 2025. The closure of the Red River containerboard mill alone is expected to reduce the company's containerboard capacity by approximately 800,000 tons on an annualized basis.
These closures will impact a total of 495 hourly and 179 salaried employees. The company stated that these actions are a critical step in its transformational journey to streamline its footprint, focus investments on facilities that best serve customers, and accelerate strategic initiatives to improve quality, reliability, and service delivery.
