Centrus Energy Corp. announced on November 20, 2024, an investment of approximately $60 million over the next 18 months to resume centrifuge manufacturing activities and expand its manufacturing capacity. This effort will take place at its facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
This investment is intended to lay the groundwork for a potential large-scale expansion of uranium enrichment at Centrus's American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. Such an expansion would require a multi-billion dollar public and private investment.
The initiative follows Centrus securing over $2 billion in contingent purchase commitments from customers and two awards from the U.S. Department of Energy for High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) enrichment and deconversion. The American Centrifuge technology is exclusively manufactured in Oak Ridge and supported by a domestic supply chain.
