Centrus Energy announced today that its subsidiary, American Centrifuge Operating, LLC (ACO), has received an award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aimed at expanding domestic commercial production of High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU). HALEU is an essential fuel for many next-generation nuclear reactor designs currently under development.
ACO is one of four awardees for HALEU production, with the contract having a minimum value of $2 million and a maximum value for all awardees of $2.7 billion over a ten-year period. The specific dollar amount for Centrus will be determined by task orders issued by the DOE.
A key aspect of this award is that ACO will manufacture centrifuges and supporting equipment exclusively in the United States, utilizing a domestic supply chain that includes 14 major American-owned suppliers across 13 states. This initiative is expected to facilitate the expansion of Centrus's HALEU production capacity, meeting the needs of the advanced nuclear industry and national security.
