Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has requested approval from the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) for a temporary surcharge on customer bills in 2025. This surcharge aims to recover approximately $1.2 billion in restoration costs incurred from Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton.
The utility is also seeking $150 million to replenish its storm reserve, which was largely depleted by Hurricane Idalia in 2023 and subsequently wiped out by Hurricane Debby in August 2024. If approved, the temporary surcharge would add about $12.02 per month to a typical 1,000-kWh residential customer bill from January through December of next year.
The four hurricanes over the past 14 months caused more than 3 million combined outages to FPL customers, necessitating extensive restoration efforts. FPL emphasized its continued investments in storm hardening and smart grid technology, which helped avoid nearly 900,000 outages in 2024 and enabled faster restorations.
