First Phosphate Corp. announced the successful production of commercial-grade lithium iron phosphate (LFP) 18650 format battery cells using North American-sourced critical minerals. Notably, the natural graphite-based active anode material for these battery cells was produced by Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG) from its operations in Quebec, Canada.
This achievement demonstrates the capability of North America, and specifically Quebec, to establish an end-to-end LFP battery supply chain using local critical mineral inputs. The LFP 18650 battery cells are versatile and widely used across various industries, including robotics, automation, military and defense, data centers, and electric mobility.
The production process for these North American battery cells was unveiled by First Phosphate CEO John Passalacqua at the Oreba3 International Conference. This collaboration highlights NMG's crucial role in providing high-quality, locally sourced anode material for the burgeoning North American battery manufacturing sector.
