Oklo Inc. announced on September 25, 2024, that it has finalized a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Idaho Operations Office. This agreement grants Oklo access to conduct site investigations at its preferred site within the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The investigations are a critical step towards the development of the company's first commercial microreactor.
The site investigations will focus on essential preparatory work, including geotechnical assessments, environmental surveys, and infrastructure planning. This foundational work is necessary before any initial construction activities can commence for the planned Aurora microreactor.
Oklo CEO Jacob DeWitte stated that the company expects to break ground at the Idaho site in 2026, with plans for the reactor to be operational by 2027. This timeline is contingent on receiving necessary approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the plant's construction and operation.
