On September 29, 2025, Old Republic International Corporation announced the formation of Old Republic Environmental, Inc., a new underwriting subsidiary that will provide customized primary and excess liability environmental insurance products to businesses of varying scales and complexities.
The new company will be led by George Holderied, a Rutgers University graduate with 22 years of environmental underwriting experience, most recently at AIG. Distribution will occur through a carefully curated network of wholesale and retail brokers, ensuring clients receive tailored coverage options and expert consultation.
This launch expands ORI’s specialty insurance footprint, adding a seventh new specialty company in the last eight years. By entering the environmental insurance market, the company diversifies its product mix and taps a growing demand for liability coverage in a sector that is increasingly regulated and risk‑intensive.
CEO Craig R. Smiddy noted that “Environmental insurance is a specialty product that aligns with our strategy and focus on underwriting excellence. George’s deep background in environmental sciences and underwriting leadership, combined with Old Republic’s brand, resources and financial strength, will allow us to leverage and grow another specialty insurance segment.”
