On June 9, 2025, mine workers from Mexico, joined by United Steelworkers (USW) union members, demonstrated outside Orla Mining's Vancouver offices. The protest aimed to highlight alleged violence and intimidation against workers at Orla’s Camino Rojo mine in Mexico.
The demonstration follows multiple complaints filed under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) Rapid Response Mechanism regarding alleged interference in workers' rights to freedom of association. The Mineros union has also filed legal appeals against a union election won by a company union in November 2024.
Scott Lunny, USW District 3 Director, stated that the USW will ensure labor and human rights are respected wherever Canadian mining companies operate. This public action underscores the ongoing scrutiny and potential reputational damage facing Orla Mining regarding its labor practices.
