Arizona Public Service (APS), along with Salt River Project (SRP), announced their commitment to Transwestern Pipeline’s Desert Southwest expansion project. This new natural gas pipeline is designed to transport natural gas from the Permian Basin in West Texas to Arizona, with construction expected to be completed by late 2029. The City of Mesa, Tucson Electric Power (TEP), and UniSource Energy Services are also finalizing negotiations for their participation.
This commitment is a critical step to maintain year-round regional energy reliability, especially as Arizona experiences unprecedented population and business growth. All existing interstate pipelines serving Arizona are currently fully subscribed, necessitating additional infrastructure to meet rising energy demand. The pipeline will fuel critical natural gas facilities, boosting the energy grid during peak demand periods in hot summers and cold winters.
Securing additional access to natural gas ensures the grid has the flexibility and strength to meet customer needs, while also supporting the integration of clean energy technologies. APS President and CEO Ted Geisler emphasized that this new pipeline represents a long-term commitment to reliability, resilience, and affordability for Arizona's energy future.
