Arizona Public Service (APS) has signed agreements to add nearly 7,300 megawatts (MW) of new energy supplies to its portfolio, marking the largest-ever planned addition of new power sources for the company. This significant procurement includes a diverse mix of renewable power, battery energy storage, and natural gas resources. Approximately 93% of this new supply will come directly from clean energy technologies.
These agreements, secured through APS’s 2023 All Source Request for Proposals (ASRFP), will introduce new generation resources and expand existing power plants and power purchase agreements. The projects are anticipated to become operational as early as 2026, ensuring the company can meet Arizona's rapidly growing energy demand. This expansion is critical as APS resource planners expect peak customer demand to grow to more than 13,000 MW by 2038.
To further prepare for future energy needs, APS is also conducting a 2024 ASRFP, seeking approximately 2,000 MW of additional resources. These resources are targeted to be in service beginning as early as 2028, with exploration for longer-range opportunities extending into the 2030s. This proactive approach aims to provide reliable and cost-competitive electricity for its expanding customer base.
