Arizona Public Service (APS), Salt River Project (SRP), and Tucson Electric Power (TEP) announced a collaborative effort to explore adding new nuclear generation in Arizona. This initiative aims to evaluate the potential of emerging nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and larger reactor projects, to support the state's rapidly growing energy needs. Nuclear energy is recognized as a valuable component for a diverse energy mix, providing reliable, carbon-free power around the clock.

APS is leading this effort, which includes assessing a wide range of possible locations for new nuclear facilities, such as sites of retiring coal plants. The utilities have jointly applied for a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations & Office of Nuclear Energy's Generation III+ Small Modular Reactor program. If approved, the grant would fund a three-year site selection process and potential preparation of an early site permit application.

While new nuclear generation would take over a decade to develop, with potential operation in the early 2040s, the utilities emphasize that planning and exploration must begin now. This long-term strategic investment underscores their commitment to ensuring a reliable and affordable electric supply for Arizona's expanding population and economy.
