Rogers Communications today unveiled Rogers Satellite, a satellite‑to‑mobile service that delivers voice and video calling over popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp and provides Internet‑of‑Things (IoT) connectivity for businesses operating in remote parts of Canada.
The service is priced at $15 per month for most consumers, with promotional offers for existing customers and beta participants, and is included at no extra cost on select premium plans. By leveraging SpaceX/Starlink and Lynk Global satellites, Rogers can reach areas south of the 58th parallel that are currently outside the reach of its terrestrial network, effectively covering the “rest of Canada” and giving the company a first‑mover advantage over Bell and Telus.
During a beta trial that ran from July to December, Rogers Satellite enabled more than one million text messages, demonstrating strong user engagement and the service’s utility for safety and connectivity in national parks and other remote locations.
For industrial customers, the platform offers fleet and asset tracking, as well as automated sensors for forestry and mining operations. The new revenue stream aligns with Rogers’ strategy to tap high‑margin IoT markets in underserved regions, where traditional cellular coverage is sparse.
CEO Tony Staffieri emphasized the strategic significance: “We’re proud to be the first and only provider in the country to offer this ground‑breaking technology so Canadians can stay connected. The launch of Rogers Satellite builds on our legacy of innovation and brings the best technology to Canadians.” He added that the service will eventually support data, traditional voice, and 911 calls as more satellites become available.
Future plans include expanding coverage northward as the satellite constellation grows, adding data services, and integrating emergency voice capabilities, positioning Rogers to capture a growing share of the Canadian IoT and remote connectivity market.
