STMicroelectronics introduced its ST25DA‑C NFC chip, the first commercial solution that supports Matter 1.5 onboarding via tap‑to‑pair, enabling battery‑less onboarding of smart‑home devices such as lighting, access control, and security cameras.

The chip is a Type 4 NFC Forum tag that harvests energy from the RF field, performs the cryptographic operations required for Matter commissioning, and embeds ST’s secure‑element for authentication, key storage, and certificate management. It meets Common Criteria and GlobalPlatform SESIP level 3 security standards, ensuring robust protection for device onboarding.

The product is available for evaluation and sampling today, with mass production slated for 2026. Matter 1.5, which introduced NFC‑based onboarding, was released earlier in November 2025, positioning the ST25DA‑C as the first commercial solution to leverage the new standard.

By eliminating the need for Bluetooth or QR‑code pairing, the chip simplifies installation for consumers and accelerates adoption of Matter‑compliant devices. ST’s CEO David Richetto highlighted that the technology “reduces setup complexity, especially for installations that are difficult to access, and positions NFC‑enabled Matter devices as a key driver of broader market adoption.”

The announcement was well received by the market, reflecting investor interest in ST’s expansion into the growing Matter ecosystem and the chip’s potential to capture a share of the smart‑home market.
