Suzano Launches Science‑Led Nature Strategy to Embed Biodiversity Across Its Operations

Suzano announced the launch of its Nature Strategy, a science‑led framework designed to embed biodiversity conservation into every aspect of the company’s operations. The world’s largest pulp producer, which manages 2.9 million hectares of owned land and influences a broader 10 million‑hectare watershed network, is positioning the strategy as a core component of its long‑term resilience plan.

The strategy, developed in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), applies a mitigation hierarchy—avoid, reduce, restore, transform—and employs the STAR metric to map sensitive ecological zones. The metric identified 125 endangered species within Suzano’s operating territories and prioritized 24 for targeted action. The plan aligns with the Kunming‑Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aiming to connect 500,000 hectares of forest fragments through ecological corridors and to enhance water availability in critical watersheds.

The launch coincides with Suzano’s centenary year and a US$100 million initiative to advance global nature protection. It builds on earlier commitments from 2020 to connect 500,000 hectares by 2030 and to achieve net removal of 40 million tons of CO₂ by 2025, reinforcing the company’s long‑term sustainability agenda.

Management emphasized that ensuring nature’s integrity is key to business resilience. Giordano Automare, Executive Manager of Sustainability, said, “Ensuring the integrity of nature means ensuring the resilience of our business and the communities we work with.” The strategy signals a shift from a CSR‑style approach to a core operational focus, aiming to mitigate environmental risks, secure regulatory approvals, and strengthen the brand among sustainability‑conscious customers.

By embedding biodiversity into plantation management and water‑use policies, Suzano expects to unlock new market opportunities for responsibly sourced pulp and paper, potentially opening revenue streams and enhancing competitive differentiation. The science‑led approach, including the RHINO methodology developed with IUCN, provides measurable targets and concrete actions that translate conservation goals into business outcomes.

The Nature Strategy positions Suzano as a leader in corporate environmental stewardship, aligning with global biodiversity targets and demonstrating proactive governance. The initiative is expected to strengthen long‑term resilience and support the company’s broader sustainability agenda.
