A new report from TransUnion, released on March 6, 2025, revealed that the vast majority of dating app users desire greater verification of user information. Specifically, 85% of women and 87% of men believe platforms should verify details such as age, recency of photos, and location.

The study found that inconsistencies in how people portray themselves online, including inaccurate pictures and misrepresented ages, are common complaints. Furthermore, more than three-quarters of users expressed willingness to undergo background checks to increase confidence in their matches.

Cecilia Seiden, VP of TransUnion’s Communities and Marketplaces business, noted that consumers place a high value on trust in online interactions. This demand for enhanced identity verification, coupled with the prevalence of romance scams and catfishing, presents a significant opportunity for dating platforms to leverage TransUnion’s TruValidate™ solutions to build user loyalty and protect against fraud.
