Pipistrel, a Textron Inc. company, announced on September 30, 2024, that its Velis Electro aircraft has begun flight training operations at Santa Monica Airport in California. This marks the first time a Velis Electro will be used for flight training under a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airworthiness exemption, making it the first FAA-exempt light sport electric aircraft at the airport.
The Eco-Aviation Foundation International, a nonprofit organization, took delivery of the aircraft and plans to use it for flight training and to launch an Eco Flight Ground School. The Velis Electro is noted for its quiet operation, producing noise levels of only 60 decibels, and its zero-carbon emissions, making it an ideal solution for eco-friendly flight training.
This initiative is expected to empower the next generation of aviation professionals by providing experience on next-generation power systems. The program also aims to create cleaner and quieter communities, aligning with broader sustainability goals in the aviation sector.
