Uber Eats has extended its autonomous delivery network into Chicago by partnering with Shake Shack and Coco Robotics, launching a fleet of zero‑emission delivery robots that will carry orders from the restaurant to customers’ doorsteps. The service, which began on November 19 2025, allows Shake Shack patrons to place orders through the Uber Eats app while Coco’s robots handle the final leg of the journey, eliminating the need for human drivers in the city’s dense urban environment.
The partnership marks a significant expansion of Uber Eats’ footprint into one of the United States’ busiest food‑delivery markets. By adding a premium national brand like Shake Shack, Uber Eats can attract new users and increase order volume, while the autonomous robots reduce labor costs and improve delivery speed and reliability. The zero‑emission technology also aligns with Uber’s broader sustainability goals, which include eliminating emissions from all deliveries by 2040 and ending unnecessary plastic waste by 2030.
Coco Robotics, which has already completed more than 500,000 zero‑emission deliveries across U.S. cities and Europe, brings a proven autonomous platform to the partnership. Uber’s autonomous strategy has also involved other partners such as Waymo and Serve Robotics, underscoring the company’s commitment to integrating advanced technology across its ride‑hailing and delivery services. Shake Shack’s history of strategic collaborations—such as its partnership with Delta Airlines—demonstrates the brand’s willingness to adopt innovative delivery solutions to enhance customer experience during peak periods.
Management emphasized the strategic fit of the collaboration. Megan Jensen, Head of Autonomous Delivery Operations at Uber Eats, said, “Coco has been a leader in autonomous delivery innovation for years, empowering merchants to offer customers fast, reliable, and consistent service. We’re thrilled to deepen our partnership with Coco and deliver the next generation of efficient deliveries to Shake Shack customers in Chicago through Uber Eats.” Steph So, Chief Growth Officer at Shake Shack, added, “At Shake Shack, we’re always looking for new ways to meet our guests where they are, and this partnership gives us another convenient option to bring the Shack experience to them, especially during the colder months.” Melissa Fahs, Chief Commercial Officer at Coco Robotics, noted, “Shake Shack has redefined what a fine casual experience looks like, and we’re proud to help extend that same level of care to their delivery orders.”
The collaboration strengthens Uber Eats’ competitive stance against rivals such as DoorDash and Instacart, both of which are also investing heavily in autonomous delivery solutions. By deploying robots in a high‑traffic urban market, Uber Eats can capture a share of the growing demand for contactless, sustainable last‑mile delivery, while reducing operational costs and environmental impact. The partnership also signals Uber’s broader ambition to integrate autonomous technology across its platform, positioning the company for long‑term growth in the evolving food‑delivery landscape.
