Uber Technologies announced on October 8, 2024, new sustainability-focused features for its platform, including an 'EV preference' option for customers. This feature allows users to opt for fully electric vehicles by default when hailing a ride in over 40 cities globally. The company previously offered 'Uber Green,' which included a mix of battery-electric and hybrid models. To support drivers in transitioning to electric vehicles, Uber is rolling out an 'EV Mentor' program and an artificial intelligence chatbot powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o. This AI assistant is designed to answer drivers' questions about purchasing and using battery-electric vehicles. These initiatives aim to accelerate the adoption of EVs within Uber's network. Furthermore, Uber has launched a partnership in the UK with British energy supplier Octopus Energy and Chinese EV firm BYD. This collaboration will co-fund 1,000 free home chargers, valued at nearly £1,000 each, for UK Uber drivers. Drivers will also gain access to Octopus' 'Intelligent Go' tariff for cheaper charging and an 8% discount on public charging through the Electroverse network, significantly reducing EV running costs.
