UL Solutions announced new certification services for distributed energy resource systems, commonly known as large microgrids. These services address emerging technologies and aim to enable safer microgrids by evaluating the interoperability of system components and various energy sources. Microgrids are local energy systems powered by sources like solar or wind, offering increased reliability and resiliency. As microgrids become larger and more complex, system-level testing is crucial to build confidence in the technology and ensure a safer transition to renewable sources. UL Solutions performs on-site evaluation and testing of large microgrids according to UL 3001, the Standard for Distributed Energy Resource Systems, a joint national Standard for the United States and Canada. This standard outlines tests for hazards associated with the interaction between various energy sources, particularly when the system operates independently from the main power grid.
