UL Solutions, in conjunction with UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement, highlighted updated smoke detector requirements during Fire Prevention Week. These updates are designed to address new fire risks and improve safety in homes and businesses. The new requirements are part of the 8th edition of UL 217, the Standard for Safety of Smoke Alarms, effective for alarms being tested as of June 30, 2024. These updates mandate more sensitive alarms and include a cooking nuisance test. The advanced detection sensing technology in new alarms helps eliminate nuisance alarms triggered by cooking, a common reason for disabling alarms. This technology also improves detection of faster-burning fires associated with synthetic materials found in modern homes, where escape time has significantly decreased.
