UL Solutions announced new testing and certification programs for battery containment enclosures and micromobility charging equipment. These programs aim to address growing concerns and incidents related to lithium-ion battery safety risks and thermal runaway events, particularly for e-bikes and other micromobility products. Battery containment enclosures, often resembling cabinets, are designed with safety features to contain thermal runaway fires and gases. UL Solutions conducts engineering evaluations and tests these enclosures per UL 1487, a binational Standard for the United States and Canada, with support from fire departments like the FDNY. Additionally, UL Solutions launched services for micromobility charging equipment, evaluated and tested per UL 4900, another binational Standard. This standard addresses electric shock and fire risks of the charging infrastructure, helping to mitigate hazards associated with the storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries and devices.
