United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) announced that its near-term, long-term, and net-zero targets have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets are confirmed to be in line with the 1.5°C pathway, making UMC the first semiconductor foundry worldwide to receive approval under this stringent standard.

UMC's validated targets include achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. This is supported by long-term goals to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 95% and Scope 3 emissions by 90% by 2050.

Near-term targets include a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030. To achieve these, UMC has outlined specific reduction strategies and engaged over 400 suppliers in its Supply Chain GHG Inventory Initiative, providing tools and resources for emissions management.
