UnitedHealth Group's Optum Rx unit announced a strategic shift in its pharmacy payment models, aiming to align more closely with the actual costs pharmacies face. This initiative seeks to better balance how pharmacies are compensated for brand and generic drugs.

The change is expected to positively impact over 24,000 independent and community pharmacies, providing them with better financial means to stock medicines and alleviate drug shortages. Full implementation of these new models is targeted by January 1, 2028.

This move is part of Optum Rx's broader commitment to pass through 100% of drug rebate discounts negotiated with pharmaceutical manufacturers to clients by 2028. The goal is to enhance transparency and ensure a more equitable payment system within the pharmacy benefit management sector.
