The tragic event occurred just before UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference, which was scheduled to take place at a Hilton Hotel. The company issued a statement expressing deep sadness and shock at the passing of their colleague.
Thompson had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and served as CEO for over three years. His death prompted other health insurance companies, including rival CVS Health, to reassess security risks for their top executives and remove leadership photos from their websites.
