The U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index reported signs of recovery in the U.S. truck freight market during the second quarter of 2025. National shipment volumes rose by 2.4% and spending increased by 1.2% from the previous quarter, marking the first quarter-to-quarter gain in both metrics in three years. All five U.S. regions experienced sequential volume gains, with the Southwest leading with a 6.7% increase. While national year-over-year metrics remained down, with shipments decreasing 9.8% and spending declining 4.9%, the year-over-year decrease in shipments was the smallest since Q3 2023. This sequential growth is an encouraging shift after years of contraction in the freight market. U.S. Bank processes an industry-leading $43 billion in freight payments annually, and these insights are crucial for understanding broader economic activity and informing business decisions.
