U.S. Bank introduced the Split World Mastercard on November 5, 2025, a credit card that automatically converts every purchase into a three‑month, interest‑free payment plan. The card carries no annual fee and no APR, and it is available wherever Mastercard is accepted.

For purchases of $100 or more, the card offers the option to extend the payment plan to six or twelve months. The extension is priced at a fixed monthly fee of $2.99 for six months and $4.99 for twelve months, a structure that provides a predictable revenue stream for the bank while keeping the base plan free.

The launch taps into a BNPL market that has grown to more than $200 billion in U.S. consumer spending in 2024, according to industry estimates. U.S. Bank’s entry positions it against fintech leaders such as Klarna, Afterpay, and PayPal’s Braintree, but it differentiates itself by offering the regulatory oversight and consumer protections of a traditional bank.

Strategically, the product is designed to boost fee income and deepen customer relationships. By offering a bank‑issued installment option, U.S. Bank can attract younger consumers—particularly Gen Z—who favor predictable budgeting over credit‑card balances. The fixed monthly fees on extended plans also create a new, recurring revenue source that complements the bank’s existing fee‑based services.

Chris Roncari, head of product and experience for consumer and small‑business payments, said the card “meets the diverse needs of today’s consumers who are seeking easy and transparent ways to fund purchases of all sizes.” He added that the Split World Mastercard “will be a top choice for Gen Z and many others who desire the broad scale usability, simplicity, and protections of a credit card but also need the financial consistency of equal monthly payments.”
