VIAVI Solutions Inc. announced on February 20, 2025, that the Battelle RavenStar Active Antenna System became the first product successfully validated under O-RAN and 3GPP test specifications at VALOR. VALOR is VIAVI's Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN, funded by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund, and officially opened on October 7, 2024.
The RavenStar system, an ultra-wideband, steerable radio unit with an integrated antenna, underwent Open Radio Unit (O-RU) testing at VALOR. This included uplink and downlink throughput leveraging VIAVI's industry-first PHY performance test, and O-RAN Working Group 4 Open Fronthaul test cases. The system passed all tests, achieving 99% of theoretical uplink and downlink throughput, demonstrating high performance.
Erik Probstfield, Senior Director, VALOR, VIAVI, highlighted that the rapid progress from the lab's launch to these first test results was driven by the unique efficiencies built into VALOR's architecture, such as the ability to integrate with devices under test in just a few hours. This successful validation reinforces VALOR's role in democratizing Open RAN testing and providing essential test results for technology development and deployment.
