VIAVI Solutions Inc. announced on October 29, 2024, that it has been selected to design, build, and operate a comprehensive Open RAN laboratory in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. This lab aims to further the adoption of Open RAN, lower barriers to entry for new players, and train a skilled workforce to fuel the Open RAN industry in Asia. The project is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Better Access and Connectivity (BEACON) Project.
The Open Radio Access Network (RAN) Interoperability Laboratory is a flagship initiative established between the United States and the Philippines. It is based on VIAVI's Automated Lab-as-a-Service for Open RAN (VALOR) blueprint, designed to address the availability, affordability, and accessibility of testing and evaluation for Open RAN networks through a highly automated hybrid testing Laboratory-as-a-Service (LaaS).
VIAVI will mirror the VALOR reference architecture, incorporating components from reputable hardware and software vendors like Fujitsu and SOLiD. The NITRO Wireless Open RAN Test Suite will conduct end-to-end validation as vendors integrate their products into this environment. This initiative is expected to promote open architecture, foster innovation, and expand digital access for the Filipino people, aligning with broader strategic visions for a prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
