On April 8, 2025, Viking Holdings Ltd and Fincantieri announced details of the Viking Libra, which will be the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions. Currently under construction at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, the Viking Libra is scheduled for delivery in late 2026.

The Viking Libra, along with the Viking Astrea (scheduled for 2027 delivery), will feature a hybrid propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, enabling zero-emission navigation. This 54,300-ton ship will host 998 guests in 499 staterooms, setting a new standard for environmental responsibility in the cruise industry.

In addition to this technological advancement, Viking and Fincantieri signed contracts for two additional ocean ships for delivery in 2031, with an option for two more in 2033. This expands Viking's committed orderbook to 26 additional river ships by 2028 and 11 additional ocean ships by 2031, projecting a total fleet of 110 river ships and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031.
