On December 2, 2024, Jay Mehta, Managing Director of Warner Music India & SAARC, detailed Warner Music Group's ambitious M&A strategy aimed at becoming a top three label in India within five years. The company views M&A as crucial for achieving deeper penetration, particularly in India's diverse regional language markets.
WMG has already established a presence in 19 of India's 28 states through strategic acquisitions and partnerships, including Divo, Global Music Junction, and Sky Digital. This localized approach is designed to grow the company's footprint from the ground up.
The company also launched Warner Music South Asia to replicate its success in India across other nations like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. This includes an investment in Giraffe Studios in Pakistan, aiming to holistically take South Asian cultures to the world.
Mehta highlighted the potential of Punjabi-language music to become the next global breakout genre, following K-pop and Afrobeats. He pointed to the international success of WMG-affiliated artists like Diljit Dosanjh, who performed at Coachella and sold out arenas in North America, and King, who achieved a Global Top 25 hit on Spotify.
