Walmart Inc. announced that long‑time CEO Doug McMillon will retire on January 31, 2026, and that John Furner, current president and CEO of Walmart U.S., will become president and CEO of the company effective February 1, 2026.

Furner joined Walmart in 1993 and has led the U.S. business since 2019, overseeing expansion of e‑commerce, digital services and supply‑chain automation. His prior roles include chief merchandising officer, chief marketing officer in China, and president and CEO of Sam’s Club.

The transition signals continuity in Walmart’s strategy. McMillon’s decade‑long stewardship has driven a transformation into a tech‑powered omnichannel retailer, with investments in e‑commerce, AI, and supply‑chain modernization. Furner’s experience across the organization positions him to sustain that momentum.

Chairman Greg Penner said, “John is the right leader to guide Walmart into our next chapter of growth and transformation.” McMillon added, “I am proud of what our associates accomplished and grateful for their commitment to our customers and communities.” Furner stated, “I am honored to lead Walmart as we enter a new retail era fueled by innovation and AI, guided by purpose and people.”

Market reaction to the announcement was modest. Analysts noted that the leadership change, while internal, still introduces uncertainty. The company’s shares slipped about 3% in pre‑market trading, reflecting investor caution over the transition.

The announcement underscores Walmart’s focus on digital expansion, AI initiatives and cost‑efficiency improvements. Furner’s appointment is expected to accelerate investments in technology platforms and associate development while maintaining the company’s scale and operational excellence.
