CenterPoint Energy proposed a solution to help the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and the State of Texas mitigate a projected electricity supply shortfall starting in summer 2025 around the greater San Antonio region. The proposal involves transferring CenterPoint's 15 large emergency generation units to the San Antonio area for two years. These units, ranging from 27mW to 32mW, could provide up to 450mW of power to be dispatched by ERCOT to serve customers, offsetting an expected 800-megawatt shortfall. CenterPoint would make no revenue or profit from this proposal, and Greater Houston Area customer bills would be reduced starting in Spring 2025. The company intends to transfer the units to a third-party government agency, which would then lease them to ERCOT. This initiative aims to address the State's growing energy needs while prioritizing customer affordability in the Greater Houston Area.
