CenterPoint Energy submitted its enhanced Systemwide Resiliency Plan (SRP), representing the largest single grid resiliency investment in the company's history. The plan is expected to reduce the impact of storm-related outages by over 1.3 billion minutes for its 2.8 million customers into 2029.
The 2026-2028 SRP builds on the progress of the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative and is designed to combat a wide range of extreme weather threats, including hurricanes, derechos, flooding, and winter storms. Key improvements include 100% of lines serving the most customers having self-healing automation devices and 99% of substations raised above the 500-year flood plain.
The plan also involves undergrounding more than 50% of CenterPoint's electric system and replacing or installing 130,000 stronger, more storm-resilient poles and braces. These actions are expected to strengthen overall resiliency and reliability of the Greater Houston-area electric system by at least 30% over a three-year period and save customers approximately $50 million in storm-related costs per year.
